Ribbons and bows have been used for centuries as a nonverbal language. They were used by French revolutionaries to convey their message. In the Middle Ages, ribbons were primarily a part of menswear, used to tie doublets to men’s hoses and fasten sleeves to their shirts. However, with the invention of the power loom in the 1700s, ribbons became far more easy to produce and widely used.

Women’s clothing was increasingly known for ornamentation, and even a working girl could get a new ribbon and change it on her hair or dress.

Today, ribbons and bows have become a symbol of girlhood. They are used to evoke a sense of femininity and empowerment.

The revived appeal of ribbons and bows is due to their versatility and affordability. You can buy an expensive, sculptural bow or recycle a ribbon from a floral arrangement. Even celebrity stylists sometimes source their bows for free.
